Ability3D launches its 3D metal printer in the Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign
A Florida-based startup named Ability3D has been working since last year on developing a 3D metal desktop printer that costs less than $3000. Ability 3D is finally ready to deliver the printer through its crowdfunding campaign.
Ability 1 metal 3D printer has finally been launched through its Kickstarter campaign. This printer can create durable and strong metal parts right in your home and office. It is available to backers for as low as $2899. Metal printer costs run into thousands of dollars, it is commendable how Ability manages to scale down its cost while still maintaining the basic features of a 3D metal printer. This metal printer makes use of two simple processes -MIG welding and CNC milling. The Ability 3D is a hybrid welding and milling machine and works by using the additive and subtractive processes, respectively. This 3D printer first deesits a layer of metal using the MIG welder and then shaves off any uneven edges using the CNC mill. This process is repeated until the object is complete. After the printing process is complete, users can remove the object from the printer using a hammer and a chisel. Moreover, users can use easily available materials like aluminium, steel and stainless steel as the printing material for this printer.
A matter in question here is – safety. Ability3D printer makers have ensured that the printer is totally safe to be used at home or at the office. The printer has an all metal construction, a sealed enclosure, a negative-pressure blower, an interlock system for the doors and handles, a motorized shutter, and an electrically isolated welding current. The Ability1 might also receive the UL and CE certification once the Kickstarter campaign kicks off successfully.
The Ability3D printer will house a built-in computer and users will have to provide a welding gas. The makers of the 3D printer had to handwrite the G-codes which make the functionality of the printer limited to simple actions. Once the Kickstarter campaign is successful, the Ability 3D team aims to develop more advanced software for the printer.
