About Kolkata
Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) is the capital of India’s West Bengal state. Founded as an East India Company trading post, it was India’s capital under the British Raj from 1773–1911. Today it’s known for its grand colonial architecture, art galleries and cultural festivals. It’s also home to Mother House, headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity, founded by Mother Teresa, whose tomb is on site.

With 48 government hospitals under the Department of Health & Family Welfare and more than 366 private medical establishments the health scenario in Kolkata is far better than many other cities in India. Going by figures the city with 27,687 hospital beds can handle any emergency situation. Thus, there are around 61.7 hospital beds for every 10,000 people in the city which is higher than the national average of 9 hospital beds per 10,000.Government has invested a lot in upgrading the health system of the city .
