Overview

Model making is a process of creation where knowledge of prototyping, materials, and manufacturing techniques enable the model builder to effectively and efficiently carve and refine a concept of a property into a physical model.

Scale Model building has many steps which include conception of ideas, searching for alternatives, making drawings, selecting the right materials, and finally, taking care of the detailing.

A scale model is most generally a physical representation of an object, which maintains accurate relationships between all important aspects of the model, although absolute values of the original properties need not be preserved. This enables it to demonstrate some behavior or property of the original object without examining the original object itself. The most familiar scale models represent the physical appearance of an object in miniature, but there are many other kinds.

Scale models are used in many fields including engineering, architecture, film making, military command, salesmanship and even fun in hobby model building. While each field may use a scale model for a different purpose, all scale models are based on the same principles and must meet the same general requirements to be functional. The detail requirements vary depending on the needs of the modeler.

Applications

materials

ABS :

Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene, or ABS, is a widely used CNC plastic, which meets the needs of many industries because of its material properties and accessible cost. ABS is one of the best machinable plastics with a low raw material cost. Both of these factors have led to the use of the material for many prototyping applications, as well as certain end-use applications.

Nylon :

Nylon – polyamide (PA) – is an engineering thermoplastic with excellent mechanical properties and high chemical and abrasion resistance.

Acrylic :

Acrylic (PMMA) is a transparent rigid plastic often used as a substitute for glass.

Softwares

ZBrush :

ZBrush is a 3D digital sculpting application developed by the American company Pixologic and combines 3D modeling, texturing and painting. It is considered to be one of the best and most popular software for creating 3D models. ZBrush does not use any CAD programs to create its models. Instead, it uses a “3D pixels” technology which is similar to sculpture. Each pixel, which is called “pixol”, contains information on depth, orientation, material and color value, making ZBrush one of the most user-friendly software for modeling and texturing.
It is basically addressed to experienced users, since this software has many complex features and tools which offer increased freedom while designing. It provides great depth and customization capabilities for everything from sculpting and brushes to materials and rendering, that’s why it has become the industry standard for highly detailed digital art in the fields of movies, computer games and illustration.

Meshmixer :

Another 3D modeling software developed by Autodesk, this timeless challenging and more user-friendly. Meshmixer’s 3D sculpting tools are somewhat basic compared to higher-end tools like Mudbox and ZBrush, however, because they are combined with dynamic remeshing infrastructure, it is possible to create extremely detailed surfaces with much lower polycounts. It is recommended for beginners in 3D modeling, students, designers, engineers and 3D hobbyists.

Maya :

Last but not least, Maya is another software coming from AutoDesk, as Mudbox and Meshmixer, yet not free. Maya software is able to produce animation, modeling, simulation, and rendering in order to help artists work faster with enhancements to existing workflows and providing new tools. Since recently Maya 3D modeling software is updated, it is also possible to sculpt virtual 3D surfaces like you sculpt real 3D objects from clay or other modeling materials. Instead of using clay, the virtual 3D surfaces are constructed using polygons. It is recommended that you use a graphics tablet in order to take full advantage of Maya’s sculpting features. However, you can still sculpt using a standard three-button mouse. Even though it may be a difficult software for beginners and you can sometimes experience bugs when designing, Maya is one of the leading industry 3D animation packages, it has won several awards and still has a lot of users. It is also common for the designers to combine the Autodesk software to reach the final result.

OUR VALUABLE

Clients

Think3D has been a great partner for us in supplying COVID-19 test cartridges on-time despite the pandemic challenges. When we came up with a new requirement needing a workforce of more than 25 people, think3D took up the challenge and arranged the workforce within 2 days. I highly recommend think3D for any manufacturing needs.

As a professor doing research on new materials, I needed a strong industry partner to assist us. think3D perfectly fit that bill. think3D team is highly knowledgeable on all manufacturing technologies and the team is very prompt in responding to all our requests. My research has been very successful, thanks to think3D team.

Asst. Professor, BITS Pilani

We found issue with one part at the time of assembly and needed a quick replacement. think3D team has quickly responded to our request, redesigned the part and printed it using metal 3D Printing and delivered in 3 days time. The part came out really well and the design was better than that of the actual one.

FAQS

Frequently Asked Questions

In most cases, the entire scale model won’t be 3D printed but some parts of it will be 3D Printed. 3D Printing the entire scale model won’t be required and isn’t advisable too as certain standard parts can be made using acrylic sheets and ABS sheets which works out cheaper than 3D Printing. The components that are complex and also minute will be 3D Printed (for ex: organic shapes). As we have end-to-end service offering, we use the most optimal solution to lower down the cost.

This is the most common question asked by our customers. Unfortunately there is no “set price” for custom model making as we have many variables to consider. Whenever there is a requirement, we sit with the customer to understand the requirement, budget and timelines in detail. Based on that, we shall arrive at our costing. As mentioned in the previous question, for scale models we use different materials, processes and tools based on the requirement and thus the price vary from model to model. Also, in many cases the design changes as we progress. Client gets new ideas or inputs that he wants to incorporate in the model. Such requirements cost additional.

We wish to have as much information as possible to arrive at the most appropriate costing and timelines. But we also have customers coming in with very little information. In such cases, we spend lot more time with customer to fine tune his/her idea and then provide the quote. But from my perspective, more the better. Below are few basic things you can think of before calling us:

  • What will this model/mock-up be used for?
  • How will it be displayed/used? (on a stand, a base, hung from wires, free standing)
  • What size or scale do you have in mind?
  • How much or how little detail is desired/required?
  • Will the model be shipped to various shows/locations or on display at one place?
  • Will any portion be powered or animated in any way? (motors, lights, sound)
  • How soon do you need the model?

There are many factors that go into determining the scale of the model. Primary determining factors are where will it be displayed and what size constraints you have?

Being an end to end service provider, we use multiple techniques and materials to make scale models at the lowest possible cost. When we look at the design, we will get an idea on the type of materials and tools required. We work with virtually any material ranging from wood, plastic and foam to advanced composites and metals of all types.

To provide a fixed price quotation for a model, ideally we require a fairly comprehensive set of drawings but we understand this isn’t always possible. As a basic guideline, for an architectural model we would require a site plan with some indication of levels (unless it’s flat) plus several elevations of the new development. Site photographs are also very useful. For display models or exhibition models we need as many images, drawings or 3D views of the proposed design as possible. But if you are at the very early stages of a project we can supply a rough cost from very minimal information.

Yes, we can. We will do the scale models based on customer requirement.

Yes. If you provide us with perfect images or CAD file, we will develop a scale model. If you are not able to give any reference images, we will take google maps as a reference input then developed it in Autocad later we will develop a scale model.

We prepare scale models of buildings, land areas, mine areas, industrial models, shopping malls. We are also able to do scale models which include water areas. We will prepare scale models based on customer’s requirement.

Get in touch, we can create new models from customer requests so let us know what you have in mind. Contact us directly at info@think3d.in or 8142896564
